Description
Technetium-99 (99mTc) is used in Nuclear Medicine because it has a half-life of 6 hours and it is not necessary to administer large quantities of drug to patients; it is capable of emitting monochromatic gamma radiation, with an energy of 140 keV. The stability and oxidation state of technetium will depend on the ligand to which it is bound.
Pertechnetate (99mTc) directly injected, tends to accumulate over a period of time, mostly in the salivary and thyroid glands, as well as in the choroid plexus and gastric mucosa of the stomach.
